Primary objective
Work with health staff to improve the health of prisoners detained at the Darwin Correctional Centre by participating in the provision of a comprehensive health care service.
Key duties and responsibilities:
1. Provide clinical leadership to the primary health care team and provide general practice and public health services to prisoners at the Darwin Correctional Centre
2. Participate in the development and delivery of public health services to enhance health outcomes and improve service delivery models in correctional facilities.
3. Participate with the management team to supervise and support the delivery of health care services, including visiting Alcohol and Other Drugs and Mental Health programs
4. Participate in emergency medical response when required and assist in the coordination of medical evacuations.
5. Support and participate in the education and training of other primary health care providers including Nurses and Aboriginal Health Practitioners.
6. Participate in the development and delivery of health activity reports to senior management and to relevant local stakeholders such as the Department of Justice.
7. Participate in the collection and maintenance of computerised client health information.
8. Develop and maintain the knowledge and skills for the position including expertise in both clinical and public health medicine.
9. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplace and foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria:
Essential
5. Medical Practitioner eligible for registration with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
6. Extensive relevant postgraduate clinical experience, including General Practice and Emergency medicine.
7. Experience and skill working with computerised patient information management systems and office applications.
8. Preparedness to undertake cross cultural training and mentorship and an ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
Desirable
9. Experience in delivering primary health care and public health services in Aboriginal communities.
10. Experience working in Corrections

Role Details & Key Information:
• Shifts: Monday to Friday, 08:00–17:00
• On-call: No on-call required at all
• Sites:
o Holtze Correctional Centre (main adult centre)
o Holtze Youth Detention
o Berrimah Correctional Centre (low-security inmates)
o Women’s prison operates separately but is part of Holtze
• Inmate Demographics:
o Up to 88% Indigenous population
o Adult male and female inmates (youth detention is separate)
• Doctors on Site: Typically 2–3 GPs on site, with potential for more in the new year
• Roster: Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm, no weekends
