The ACT Health Directorate (AHD) supports the Minister for Health and the Minister for Mental Health in the ACT, providing a strong policy and population health capability based on a foundation of world-leading health and medical research.

We develop strategies and sets the direction to ensure that services meet community needs and expectations, deliver improved health outcomes, and that the health system is innovative, effective, and sustainable now and in the future.

Key to this is also the professional leadership provided by the clinical leaders of the ACT, including the Chief Psychiatrist.

This position fulfills the statutory role as Chief Psychiatrist under the Mental Health Act 2015 (the Act) and as such has accountability to the Minister for Health. The role of the Chief Psychiatrist is to safeguard the rights of individuals, improve service delivery, administer the functions under the Act and monitor standards and services.

The Chief Psychiatrist carries critical functions for the operation of the Act and is a cornerstone of the oversight of the public mental health system across Canberra Health Services and Calvary Public Hospital. Additionally, the Chief Psychiatrist plays a role in the monitoring of private psychiatric facilities.
